Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,
Christmas is coming and many of us feel excited. During Christmas, many Chinese are even busier than the Westerners. Valentine’s Day is welcomed by almost everyone here in China. Why do western festivals enjoy such popularity? Have you ever thought about it? The most important reason may be the cultural communication between China and western countries. Another reason may be Chinese people’s curiosity about western festivals. Businessmen hope to take this advantage to make a large profit as well.
Standing in front of you, I, an English teacher, can understand it and do hope you can know much about English culture through western festivals. But nowadays young people in China celebrate almost every western festival, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Halloween, the Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or whatever. Do we really use the celebration to show our love or appreciation to someone or just copy them because what westerners have is better than ours?
The popularity of western festivals has made some people ignore our own festival cultures. Actually, many young people do know much about western festivals, but little do they know about our Chinese traditional festivals, such as the Lantern Festival, the Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Double Seventh Day, the Chongyang Festival. The phenomena and tendency are dangerous to our traditional festivals.
Every country has its own festivals, which make it different from others. Every festival in China has a long history and a fascinating legend. Actually, Americans have Christmas while we enjoy the Spring Festival. Europeans have Valentine’s Day and we Chinese love the Double Seventh Day. Our festivals carry many interesting and beautiful stories. They should play an important role in shaping our minds and influencing our ways of life. Festivals in the West are mostly related to their religion, such as Christmas and Easter, But here, in China, not all those western festival lovers believe in Christianity, some even know nothing about the western history, western culture, western lifestyle, Why so crazy?
I worry about the disappearance of some Chinese traditions and customs. The Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Qingming Festival help to unite our nation for hundreds of years, preserve our cultural heritage and promote national values. If we fail to better protect our own traditional culture, we will be culturally defeated in the coming era of globalization. Cultural diversity is what we hope for. What if all the countries just have the same festival left in the world? What if our young people just admire what we don’t have and dislike what we have? What if a garden has only one kind of flower, even the most beautiful flower---the rose, for instance?
Therefore, we should protect our own festival cultures. We should be conscious of culture impact from Western countries such as the USA, which try to make their cultures known to us Chinese, especially to younger generation, so that their culture can replace ours. How terrible! The big names in American fast food are now well known all over the world. McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King sell pizzas, chips, hot dogs, hamburgers and fried chicken from New York to London and to here Nanjing. We are exposed to what they have everywhere, but what can we do to make westerners interested in our festivals?
We must keep our brains awake. We must realize that we ought to inherit and develop our traditional cultures. I’m not against the popularity of western festival cultures, but we shouldn’t forget ours, which make us what we were
yesterday, what we are today and what we will be tomorrow. I want ours well preserved!
Ladies and gentlemen, China is great not because it is perfect, but because it is our home forever, but because it can always be made better--- and the unfinished work of making our country better is left to all of you here in the future. We will have what we have been dreaming of for centuries with your belief, wisdom and hard work. We are so
proud of you. We love you more than you can ever know. We believe in you! Let’s preserve and take pride in our own festivals forever. Thank you!
